Jon and I have figured out the Season Five plot line for Downton Abbey:
The time shifts to 1940. Michael Gregson is recruited by Herman Goering in a Bavarian bierstube and becomes a pilot for the Luftwaffe. Gregson in his anger over being slighted by the Granthams drops a 1000-pound bomb that lands squarely on the Abbey. Everyone inside the Abbey is killed. Lady Mary of course dies alone. Anna and Mr. Bates expire quickly in each other's arms, but Barrow dies a prolonged, agonizing death while Isis, the dog he locked in the shed, licks his bloody wounds.
The only survivors are the 110-year old Dowager Countess who was visiting Mrs. Crawley for a game of gin rummy when the bombing occurred. Mr. Carson was having a pint at the pub and Molesley was getting fresh veggies at the market for Mrs. Patmore when the air raid sirens went off. Mrs. Crawley and the Dowager Countess simultaneously fall in love with the dashing Mr. Molesley, but Molesley goes for the pounds sterling. He and the Dowager marry, placing him as master of the Downton estate. Molesley's first act as Lord is the sacking of Mr. Carson. Carson is rehired as footman after he grovels at Lord Molesley's feet and the whole series ends with Carson donning the white gloves of shame.
