After the June fire there was one, lone turkey who wandered around the neighborhood and finally it disappeared. Eaten by a coyote? Died of despair? We'd heard rumors of the carcasses of dead deer and turkeys being removed before we locals were allowed back in our homes. It didn't make sense though. Why wouldn't the big birds just fly away before the fire? Or did they burn up with their chicks huddled under their wings?
Well today they're back! Four, indescribably homely birds enjoying sunflower seeds scattered out back for today's storm. Hope there's even more. We'll find out soon when the gobbling starts in the spring.
